What is the National Occupation Certificate: Fitness Instructor?

SAQA ID 118689: NQF 4 Occupational Certificate: Fitness Instructor (Total Credits: 180)

This qualification replaces the CATHSSETA Qualification: National Certificate in Fitness (SAQA 67693) and is a National Registered Trade Qualification with the QCTO.

The Occupational Certificate is comprised of 3 components, strategically presented to continuously develop and progress learning and professional development.

  • Knowledge Modules (60 credits)
  • Practical Skills (60 credits)
  • Workplace implementation (60 credits)

The National Occupational Certificate in Fitness is a registered trade and prepares students for a specialised workplace. Firstly, students will undergo extensive knowledge subjects, preparing them for practical modules and working. Secondly, students will develop a wide variety of practical modules that are scientifically sound and skill’s based. Third, students will operate as professionals under mentorship in the workplace. This is done at the prestigious Campus Boutique Gym and Wellness Centre. And lastly, students will complete a First Aid Level 1 certification with Pulse Point. Therefore, putting all these pieces together makes you the complete fitness package.

What makes a Trade Certificate different and important?

A job that typically is done outside of a traditional office environment. A trade requires specialised practical skills to do the job. It is generally known as a “hands-on” job.

Trades are jobs that are relevant to everyday life. Historically, trade jobs provide working longevity because of the specialised skills component.

Fitness has been long viewed as a highly practical, specialised job. It therefore fits the repertoire of a Trade. It is also the mandate of South Africa to improve our “working force” which is done through the Trade qualifications framework, and not merely as an employee skills development.

The entry requirements for a NQF 4 Trade certificate are: National Grade 11 or Grade 12 Senior Certificate, NQF 3 Trade qualification.
